ABOUT ME
Putting My Experience
to Work
Katherine Harrington is running for West Des Moines City Council because she believes strong communities are built through collaboration, smart growth, and leaders who truly listen. Katherine has dedicated her career to bringing people together to strengthen local economies, create opportunity, and build communities where everyone can thrive.
Since 2020, Katherine has served as President and CEO of the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce, where she leads economic development initiatives, supports local businesses, and partners closely with city leaders, schools, and nonprofits to grow opportunity across the region. Under her leadership, the Chamber has launched new workforce and leadership programs, expanded support for small and minority-owned businesses, and reinvested hundreds of thousands of dollars back into the community through scholarships, grants, and nonprofit partnerships.
In 2024, Katherine also became President of the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce Foundation, a 501(c)(3) created to focus on workforce development, economic prosperity, and civic engagement. The Foundation brings together corporate partners, educators, and community organizations to prepare the next generation of leaders and strengthen the long-term vitality of West Des Moines.
Katherine brings a unique perspective to City Council — one that blends business experience, nonprofit leadership, and a deep understanding of how city decisions impact residents, employers, and families. She is known as a collaborative problem-solver who focuses on practical solutions, long-term planning, and building partnerships that deliver real results.
Katherine and her husband Craig Walter who is a teacher at Valley High School are proud to raise their family in West Des Moines, and she is deeply committed to preserving the qualities that make the city such a special place to live, work, and raise a family. She is running for City Council to help guide smart growth, strengthen neighborhoods, support a thriving local economy, and ensure West Des Moines remains a welcoming and connected community for generations to come.
